Present day

“A puppy!” Neve squeals as the Caboodle bounces across the floor at Faux Paws. They’re closing early this year and we couldn’t wait until after Christmas, so the kids got their present early. I’m happy to say that the shelter is empty and though we don’t expect a big influx of unwanted pets after Christmas, occasionally it happens.

The club is heavily involved, and though it’s Steel’s baby, we all do our bit when we can.

The club swiftly dealt with the backyard breeder who the puppies were seized from, and this was the last one available in a litter of five. Goddamn backyard breeders make me sick.

Safe to say that they won’t be operating ever again, but the laws need to be stricter.

He’s a bouncy, friendly little thing and the kids squeal with delight. Though he’s more a wish from my daughter, Aiden seems equally taken with him.

We’ve visited many times and the kids love coming in to say hello to all the dogs. Now they’re old enough to have a pet, and the dog just loves them to bits.

“Daddy!” Neve squeals when Kennedy lets her down to pat him.

“Got to be gentle, baby,” I tell her.

However, the little guy is already sweet and great with kids. It’s the reason I had the idea.

Caboodles can be very energetic dogs, but this little guy is truly a superstar.

“What will we call him?” I say, crouching down as I run a hand over my son’s hair.

“Daddy?” Aiden says, pointing at his snout. “Thor, Daddy?”

Typical. Of course, he wants to name this fluffy dog Thor.

“No!” Neve says immediately. “His name is Milo.”

Milo?

“Yeah, Milo!” Aiden fist pumps the air.

I slap my forehead as Kennedy laughs. “Milo it is.”

My kids can’t grow up without a dog, for Christ sakes. Despite being young, we've taken them to see the puppies several times. It’s the only time they actually listen and behave themselves.

I love being a stay-at-home-dad. There's no better feeling than being present in my kids' lives, watching them grow. I won't lie, the transition was challenging in the beginning. But now I can’t picture it any other way. We don’t want a nanny raising our kids, and we’ve got enough help with the club sisters and Stevie. Twins are a challenge, but I wouldn’t change it for anything. They’ve definitely brought me and Kennedy closer together and she’s an awesome mom. I love how she balances work and being a parent and makes it look effortless. I wish I could do the same, but it ain’t ever gonna be me.

But when my kids look up at me and smile, all the difficulties melt away and my heart thunders in my chest. My goal is to be a dad my kids respect, admire, and trust to confide in. We also have a shitload of fun. Not all of it Kennedy approved, but they keep me on my toes.

I look up at Kennedy, who’s smiling from ear to ear. “I think they like him.”

I smile back. “Best Christmas ever?”

“Definitely.
